Casino Gaming Glossary
Essential terminology and definitions for understanding card games, casino games, and gaming strategy
Card Game Terms
Ante
A bet that each player must place before receiving their cards in poker or other card games. The ante ensures there is money in the pot to be won and encourages active participation from all players.
Bust
In blackjack, when a hand exceeds a total of 21 points. A bust automatically results in a loss of the hand, as the hand value becomes unplayable according to blackjack rules.
Dealer
The person responsible for distributing cards and managing the game. In casinos, the dealer is a trained professional who ensures game rules are followed and bets are properly handled.
Fold
The action of withdrawing from the current hand by not matching the current bet. When a player folds, they forfeit their claim to the pot and any cards they have contributed.
Hand
The combination of cards held by a player. The strength of a hand is determined by poker hand rankings or the total value of cards, depending on the specific game being played.
Flush
A poker hand containing five cards of the same suit in any order. A flush ranks above a straight but below a full house in standard poker hand rankings.
Betting & Bankroll Terms
Bankroll
The total amount of money a player has set aside specifically for gambling. Proper bankroll management is essential for sustainable play and involves setting aside funds you can afford to lose without affecting daily expenses.
Bet
Money wagered on the outcome of a game or hand. Bets can vary in size and type, and understanding betting structures is fundamental to all casino games.
Call
Matching the current bet made by another player. When you call, you place money into the pot equal to the current bet amount to continue playing the current hand.
Raise
Increasing the size of the current bet. A raise forces other players to decide whether to match the new higher bet, fold, or make their own raise.
Pot
The total amount of money accumulated from all player bets in a single hand or game. The pot is won by the player with the best hand or the last remaining player.
House Edge
The mathematical advantage that the casino holds over players in any given game. This percentage ensures the casino profits over time while players on average lose money.
Game Strategy Terms
Odds
The probability that a particular outcome will occur. Understanding odds is crucial for making informed decisions about whether to place a bet and what size that bet should be.
Bluff
In poker, a deceptive bet made to convince opponents that your hand is stronger than it actually is. Successful bluffing requires reading opponents and understanding betting patterns.
Position
Your seating order relative to the dealer in poker games. Position significantly affects strategy, as players in later positions have more information before making decisions.
Probability
The mathematical chance that a specific event will occur, expressed as a percentage or ratio. Probability forms the foundation of understanding casino games and expected value.
Expected Value
The average return you can expect from a bet over the long term, calculated by multiplying the probability of each outcome by its payoff amount.
Variance
The measure of how much actual results fluctuate around the expected value. High variance games can produce larger swings in short-term results.
Historical Gaming Terms
Suit
One of the four categories in a standard deck: hearts, diamonds, clubs, or spades. The suit system was developed in the 15th century and remains fundamental to card game structure.

Face Card
